RADIO OBSERVATIONS AND SOLAR ENERGETIC PARTICLE EVENTS
Dr. Karl-Ludwig Klein

Radio bursts in the cm to km wave band probe energetic electrons in different regions of the solar atmosphere and interplanetary space, ranging from the chromosphere to the orbit of the Earth. Combining spectrography and imaging, these observations give a tool to probe the conditions under which electrons are accelerated in the low atmosphere or at coronal shock waves, and the way in which they get access to interplanetary space. These constraints can also be used to probe the acceleration and propagation of solar energetic protons and ions. In this seminar I will give an observational assessment on the role of flares and shocks as accelerators of solar energetic particle events, and use radio diagnostics to probe the confinement and escape of energetic particles from acceleration sites in the corona.
